This is probably one of the easiest and best FTP Clients to use to upload websites. The following tutorial will guide you to use this software...

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP client software allows you to transfer files between your hard drive and a remote server. For instance, you could put your personal home page up on the Web by transferring files from your hard drive to a Web server, or you can download programs from your favorite shareware site.

Ever wonder what "http" stands for in all of the Web sites you access with your Web browser? Hypertext Transfer Protocol is how your browser transfers files from remote web servers to graphically display web content on your monitor. Although HTTP does a good job of downloading HTML files and the small bitmaps displayed within them, it was never designed to transfer large files.

1. Setting up Your Account:

Start the Software. A session properties box appear (image 1). Enter your details as described below:

Profile Name: In this box you can create your own profile if you desire. We've named it PC Music FTP Server, our original site name (i.e. the name of the server)

Host Name/Address: In this space you need to enter the IP address or FTP address of the host server.

  • IP addresses look like this:    10.10.10.1
  • FTP addresses look like this: ftp.hostserver.com

Host Type: Preferred setting is  "Automatic Detect", but if you know the type of server your host is running, then you may select it from the drop menu.

User ID: (Case sensitive!!) Enter your login name in this space.

Password: (Case sensitive!!) Type the password in this space.

Save Pwd: Check this box if you want the password to be remembered.

2. Setting up Port Number:

Click on the Advanced Tab (Image 2)

Port number: Default port for FTP is usually 21, but this may vary from server to server. If your host provided you with another port number, type it in this box.

Once you've entered all the required details, click on "apply" to store this information, and on OK to connect.

3. Uploading your Site

Once connected you will see a screen with 2 columns. On the left hand side are the files located on your computer, on the right the files located on your host server (Your website).

To upload files to your host server, follow these steps:

  1. On the left hand side... go to the directory containing your website files. If your files are located on a different drive, double click the drive letter and look for your files in there. (Note: double clicking on a file will upload the file!)
  2. On the right hand side... select the folder you wish to upload your files to. Normally, the default path is opened if you log in.
  3. Back to the left... Select the files you wish to upload. (Hold down control and click the files to select more than one file) You can also select to upload entire directories.
  4. Click on the upload icon (the arrow pointing right) to start the transfer.
